Banish the Winter Blahs!
Do you feel like your “get up and go” got up and left? Is hibernating under a blanket in front of Netflix about all the energy you can muster? For 5% of the population, Seasonal Affective Disorder* negatively affects their life. However, for the majority of us, the winter blahs can be banished, allowing us to skate through winter with joy. Let's explore a few ways.
Mark it on the calendar
Avoid starring in Groundhog Day. Instead plan something fun to anticipate each week. It can be as simple as hosting a game night, meeting friends for a walk, joining a Group, or even a quick getaway. Having something regular to look forward to can definitely brighten your outlook.
Learn something new
What have you always wanted to learn? Winter is a great time to pick up a new hobby, try a new craft, or develop a new skill. Consider taking a class in your interest area to help you learn.
Go outside
The damp, cold, and gray may not seem inviting, but fresh air and movement can be very rejuvenating. It doesn’t have to be intense, but a bit of movement energizes the body. Take a walk at a park, play with your kids, or go sledding, skiing, or ice skating.
Exercise regularly
Although the gravitational pull of the couch seems stronger than anywhere else in the winter, engaging in regular exercise can really boost your energy level and lift your spirits. Try one of the outside ideas above or go to the gym, enjoy a pick up basketball game, or put on some great music and have a dance party at your house.
Get good sleep
A good night’s sleep will leave you feeling rested and energized—ready to take on the day. Create a good sleeping environment by keeping the room dark and at a comfortable temperature. Avoid caffeine late in the day, and give your T.V. and other devices an early bedtime as the light from screens can affect your sleep.
Eat nourishing foods
The temptation to drink copious amounts of warm, caffeinated drinks and lots of warm, comforting, sugary carbs is strong . Unfortunately, caffeine and sugar can affect your ability to sleep, and when the energy wears off, you may feel even more sluggish.Instead aim for balance, incorporating lean meats and fresh fruits into your diet.
With more than a month of winter to go, these tips can help you send those blahs packing and enjoy the season at hand.
