Has your job ever felt like a shoe that didn't quite fit right? By all accounts it was a great job, and you felt like you should love it….but at the end of the day, you left the office with a proverbial blister forming on your heel, rather than a spring in your step. If so, over time, your peace was likely affected.

This is how we can feel when we aren’t operating from the space of purpose that God has for us. And while God can still use our employment, true purpose extends beyond simply where we work.

So how does one determine their purpose? Knowing the God of the universe who made us, loves us, and counts each hair on our head (Psalm 139), is foundational.

Once we have put our trust in him, our purpose broadly centers around the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

Great Commandment - Matthew 22:37-39
37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Great Commission- Matthew 28:19-20
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,[a] baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

When you are unsure of what God’s purpose is for you in a particular season, these are the foundational purposes to fall back on. Loving God, loving others, and teaching them about Christ can be done regardless of where we work and live. This is true for all believers

But God also has a unique plan God specific for each person. He uses our unique personalities and the spiritual gifts we receive when we put our faith in him for the distinct purpose of spreading the Gospel. The things we are interested in, or experiences we have had can create opportunities to come alongside and build relationships with others, allowing us to speak into their life in a godly way. And finally, God uses the places you find yourself right now such as work, the playground with your kiddos, or that Saturday morning pick up sports team as a space to be a light.

When we tune into these particular components, we are able to operate from a peaceful place of purpose that feels like a perfect fit.
