Bible in a Year: ❏ Genesis 32-35 | ❏ Mark 9
One of the longest days of my life unfolded in the summer of ‘91.
My grandparents and two brothers took Mom to a church revival in Indiana. Grandaddy Cephas openly expressed his unwillingness to go, but daughters can be convincing.
It had been a year since sickness had stripped Mom of her ability to walk, and this particular revival had a reputation for reversing physical afflictions. Unfortunately, this was not the case for Mom. She came home physically the same, but spiritually broken.
Mom began to drift from God’s truth, but it wasn’t out of anger. Her mind and body were exhausted and distracted. It took some time before she began trusting her heart to Jesus again. She read Scripture, found different at-home preachers, and occasionally attended church in person. Her faith became proactive, allowing her spirit to fill as her body continued to empty.
Hebrews 2:1
So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
Whether you’ve been weakened by sudden sickness or you’re as wise as King Solomon, we’re all prone to wander from what we know is true, closing our eyes to God’s wonder. Drifting isn’t necessarily caused by hurt, rebellion, or effort. It simply happens. Life, like water, is constantly in motion, so you need to anchor yourself strategically.
It’s a guarantee that your physical clock will run out. That’s why your spiritual life matters more than you realize. Hebrews 2:1 is a warning to anyone who knows God’s love: a false sense of spiritual self leads to emptiness. It pulls you away from what brought you to Christ.
You begin to only pray for what you want, or stop praying altogether. You start surrounding yourself with people who only partially listen to the guiding Spirit inside them, causing you to close your eyes to all you know to be true of God. You start relying on your own strength, rather than the strength of our rock, Jesus. Worship songs, like “Firm Foundation,” suddenly begin to sound monotonous.
Is this you?
Avoid the errors before you make them by finding your way back to the kind of worship that flooded your heart. The more time you spend deepening your faith, the stronger your connection with God becomes, anchoring your heart and filling your spirit with his presence.
Questions:
Do you find yourself drifting?
Do you have spiritual anchors to prevent you from drifting too far?
Next Steps:
Take steps to anchor yourself in Jesus by participating in Bible studies or joining a Group. Maybe it’s time to take the next step in your faith by choosing to lead a Group.
Pray for guidance and openness.
21 Days of Prayer and Fasting - Day 11
Today’s Prayer Focus: To Live in Freedom
Today’s Prayer:
Thank you, God, for freeing me! You have freed me from sin and from shame. You have freed me from the law and from striving to earn salvation. You have freed me from death itself! For all those things and more, I praise you. Help me to live as someone who is free. Don’t let me fall back into the posture of a slave, to revert to serving the things that used to control me. May you be the only one I serve, for you bought my freedom and loyalty at a high price on the cross. In gratitude, I ask, may your will be done in my life. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Hebrews 2:1
So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
