Bible in a Year Reading Plan: Deuteronomy 16-19 | 1 Peter 2
I don’t think I’m alone when I say overcoming a scarcity mindset about money is a constant battle.
The scripts that form in our brains from a young age tell us that there is never going to be enough, or what we have is going to be taken from us. The worst part of this mindset is the inability to fully enjoy whatever amount of money God has blessed us with.
Our feelings about spending money - on pleasure and necessity - are complicated and often not guided by any plan at all, which can leave us feeling guilty about our decisions. This is not how God intended us to live.
Ecclesiastes 5:18-19
Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life - this is indeed a gift from God.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to be free to enjoy what God has given us? It’s possible when we follow a path that puts us into an abundance mindset; a path that not only blesses us but those in our lives, too.
This is where I share that participating in “Financial Peace University” changed my mind and heart around this subject and provided a practical plan for me to honor God with my money.
Proverbs 22:7
Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.
The only way to truly experience the truth of this verse is to take God at his word and take steps to get out of debt. Life is hard, and sometimes out of no fault of our own, problems come that leave us buried and feeling helpless. However, God is closer to you in these times of brokenness than you could ever imagine.
Psalm 34:18 NIV
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Today, maybe your crisis is an invitation to take God at his word and pursue a financial plan that will lead you into peace. Remember, you are not alone in this. The Lord is close to you, guiding you each step of the way. Trust his prompting, and take the next step he puts on your heart as you begin making a plan for your finances today.
Questions:
Do you feel like you have a scarcity mindset that is keeping you from using and enjoying the finances God has given you?
Do you know where your money is going each week?
Do you have an intentional financial plan that is leading you toward freedom in this area?
Next Steps:
This month, commit to picking one thing you currently buy most days, like coffee, lunch, energy drinks, etc., and choose a less expensive alternative by planning ahead. Take the money you save and put it to better use in a different area of your finances.
Then, find another bad habit you have with your money and make a small intentional change to better your situation. A little bit of consistent change can go a long way.
If you’re ready to take the step and make a plan but need a place to start, you can find links and a worksheet on the CedarCreek App. Go to the Engage tab and scroll down to the Generosity section and select the Budgeting tile.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for staying close to me as I navigate making a plan that honors you with my money. I know that only you can change my heart and my priorities. Help me be a person who seeks your kingdom first, trusting that everything I need will be provided to me. Thank you for the grace that you extend to me as I imperfectly try to live my life for you. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
1 Timothy 6:6-7
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
