Characteristics of God: He is patient.
There is a kind of waiting that feels like silence, and then there is God’s waiting, which is full of mercy, intention, and deep love.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
What we label as delay is divine compassion. God isn’t dragging his feet, he is extending grace. Every extra moment is an invitation to return, to grow, to be transformed, and to come back into alignment with him.
When God revealed his own character, he didn’t begin with power or judgement. He began with patience: “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6b).
This is who God is at his core - not easily angered, not quick to walk away, but overflowing with steady, faithful love that doesn’t shift with your performance.
God’s patience is not weakness; it’s strength under control. It’s love that chooses to stay, and mercy that continues even when we fall short.
And yet, how often do we misunderstand it?
Romans 2:4
Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
His patience isn’t permission to stay stuck, but an opportunity to change. It’s the gentle hand that leads us back, not the force that drags us forward.
God waits, but not passively.
He waits while pursuing you … shaping you … preparing you for the life you’ve been praying for, even when you can’t see progress. He sees every hidden struggle, quiet surrender, and moment you choose to keep going.
And still, he does not rush you or count your failures. He is cultivating your heart, growing something deeper than quick results, something everlasting.
If you feel like you’re behind, like you’ve taken too long, like you should be further along by now, hear this: God is not frustrated with your progress. His patience proves his commitment to you.
He is not standing at the finish line disappointed. He is walking beside you, step by step, with mercy that does not run out and love that does not grow tired.
He is not finished with you yet.
Questions:
In what areas do you feel “behind” and how might God be inviting you to see those places with grace instead of pressure?
Is there anything God has been gently calling you to change, release, or return to?
How can you begin to extend this same patience to yourself this week?
Next Steps:
When you start to feel rushed, anxious, or behind, take a moment to remind yourself: God is not in a hurry with me. Let that truth ground you.
Set aside intentional time this week, even if it’s just 5 minutes, to sit with God without an agenda. Let his patience reshape your pace.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for being patient with me. Thank you for not rushing my growth or turning away when I fall short. Help me to trust your timing, even when I don’t understand it. Teach me to see your delays as love, not absence. Help me to release the pressure I put on myself, and instead, walk in step with your grace. Shape me, grow me, and remind me that you are not finished with me yet. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Jeremiah 9:23-24a
This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord….”
