Bible in a Year: Isaiah 23-28 | Romans 1

Have you noticed how often people tailor their lives to look good in photos these days?

Humans have always been tempted to present a flawless image to others, while hiding their sins or struggles from public view - social media just amplifies it. We all know what we see posted is the highlight reel, not a person’s real life. Still, it’s so easy to feel like we need to measure up to what they’re portraying: the perfect family, vacations, careers, lifestyles...

Personally, my weakness is a perfectly clean house - beautifully decorated, with no clutter on the tables or dishes in the sink. I don’t think my house has looked like that in ... well, ever. It can make me feel inadequate, and as a result, it can be tempting to try to hide the reality - to angle pictures so they don’t show the unswept floors and create excuses not to invite people over.

Sometimes we live our lives like that too. We try to keep our sins and struggles out of view, like clutter shoved haphazardly in a closet. We find reasons not to let people in, for fear they’ll see what a mess we really are.

If I succumbed to the temptation to hide my messy house, I’d be missing out on some of the richest moments of my life: hosting weekly Bible studies, game nights, backyard fires, and weekends with my college friends.

James 5:16
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

I’ve learned that when you let people in to truly see the mess (from the pile of unwashed dishes in the sink to the sins you’ve been afraid to admit), those who truly love you are going to respond with more grace than you think. They will reassure you that it doesn’t change your relationship, come alongside you as you work through the struggle, and offer support and encouragement through some of your biggest battles.

And all of those things that are true of your loved ones? They’re ten times as true with God. He is faithful to forgive, and he wants to offer you the true freedom that comes from truly being known.

When we stop managing impressions and start letting God and others in, true healing can begin.

Questions:
What messes have you been hiding from view? What makes it hard for you to let people in to see it?

Do you have anyone you feel safe enough to fully allow into your life?

Next Steps:
Have an honest conversation with a trusted loved one about whatever you’re struggling with now. If you aren’t in one already, join a Group, where you can start cultivating those authentic relationships and safe spaces to have honest conversations. Or, maybe it’s time to consider starting a Group so you can help provide that space for others.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I am so grateful that with you, we don’t have to hide or put on a perfect image. You already see us, know us, and love us exactly as we are. Whatever we are struggling with, we can bring it to you for help, forgiveness, and healing. Thank you for sending your Son to give his life and bear the cost of our sins, so we can live free. May your will be done in us and through us. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:
Galatians 5:13
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
