Romans 12:18 ESV
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
When you hear the word "forgiveness," how does it make you feel?
Better yet, when it comes to forgiveness, how often would you say you fully release someone from their offense against you? I'm not just talking about the times you get cut off in traffic, or the times you've said over and over again you don't like celery, but you keep finding it in your food.
I also mean the times someone has gone behind your back and betrayed your trust, or you found out they were talking about you and telling others the stories you'd asked them not to share. Or even harder struggles where you've been betrayed, lied to, or the other person has left the relationship entirely.
Even in those hard times, as followers of Jesus, we are asked to forgive others as we've been forgiven.
Ephesians 4:32
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Ouch. For some of us, this can be hard to wrap our minds around.
But don't miss this - forgiveness doesn't mean entirely overlooking an offense. However, it does mean letting go of whatever is holding you down, releasing a person from a debt, and pursuing peace whenever possible.
This week, we'll dive into how God calls us to pursue reconciliation whenever repentance and wisdom make it possible.
Unforgiveness doesn't just chain us to the past; it keeps us from experiencing the freedom and peace God desires for us. True forgiveness releases both the other person and our own hearts, unlocking the door to the life God wants us to live.
Discussion Questions:
Ice Breaker: What comes more naturally to you: giving or receiving?
Why do you think people often confuse forgiveness with excusing someone's behavior?
Read Matthew 18:21-35: How does this story challenge the way we typically think about forgiveness and mercy?
Have you ever found yourself replaying an offense, keeping score, or holding on to what someone owed you? What effect did that have on you?
Reflect and Respond: Who is one person you may need to extend grace to this week, or who is one person you may need to ask forgiveness from for something you've done to hurt them? What is one step you can take toward peace or reconciliation?
Prayer:
Lord, I come to you honestly and ask for your help. Please reveal any places in my heart where I am holding on to unforgiveness. Give me the courage to release those burdens to you and address them as you would ask me to do in my relationship. Help me to forgive as boldly as you have forgiven me. I love you, I trust you, and I worship you. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Ephesians 4:15
Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.
