What are your plans this summer? As you're scheduling your barbecues and trips to the beach, thinking about tackling projects and spending time with loved ones, have you carved out time to make a difference in our community? That might be the last thing you're thinking; it also might be the most important thing you do.
Why does serving others matter? Jesus said, “let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:16). When you meet the needs of someone else, you reflect God’s heart and provide others with a glimpse of His goodness. However, the connection may not be immediately clear for the people you serve. Whether someone asks “why?” or not, be prepared to explain, “I do this because you matter to God, and you matter to me.” A generous act of service combined with a simple reference to God’s heart can lead to an eternal impact!
Where do you start? Begin by praying. Ask God to make you aware of the needs around you. He’s intimately aware of every opportunity for you to be part of His work; He’s eager to help you see! As you follow His leading, you’ll be delighted by spontaneous occasions to help. You’ll wait a few moments to hold the door for a stranger. You’ll offer a hand to someone whose hands are extra full. You’ll pick up trash that others have dodged. Each of these gestures matters!
It’s likely God’ll also nudge you to do something more challenging. Like never before, you may find yourself thinking about your local schools or people with disabilities, first responders or the elderly. What’s one thing you could do to show these special people that they matter? Could you rally a group to donate supplies to the school down the street? Could you make dinner for a family raising a child with special needs? What about delivering cookies to the local fire station, or passing out flowers at a nursing home? With just a little bit of thought and effort, you will be bringing the help and hope of Jesus to our community.
There are so many ways you can spend your summer. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be part of God’s work in the world! When you do, you’re sure to have a summer that’s full of fun and significance!
