Bible in a Year: Proverbs 8-9 | Colossians 3
Characteristics of God: He is a redeemer.
There are moments in life that feel too broken to restore, whether it be situations we wish we could undo, wounds that seem too deep, or seasons that leave us wondering if anything good could come from them. Regret can feel heavy, and shame can try to convince us that our story is beyond repair. We replay decisions, wishing for a different outcome, or carry pain that doesn’t seem to have a purpose. However, Scripture reminds us again and again that God is not just a healer; he is the Redeemer.
In Exodus 17:8-16, the Israelites faced an overwhelming battle against Amalek. As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed, but when he grew tired, the battle shifted. So Aaron and Hur came alongside him, holding up his arms until victory was secured. Afterward, Moses built an altar and called it “The Lord is my Banner.” God didn’t just give them victory, he redeemed their weakness, turning dependence into triumph and isolation into unity.
God’s redemption often comes in ways we don’t expect.
Psalm 60:4 says:
But you have raised a banner for those who fear you - a rallying point in the face of attack.
The banner represents hope, identity, and protection. It declares that even in the middle of the battle, we belong to him. What feels like defeat does not get the final say, God raises a banner of redemption over our lives.
The greatest redemption story is still unfolding. In 1 Corinthians 15:52-54, we are reminded of the ultimate victory:
It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown … those who have died will be raised to live forever…. “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
What once held power: sin, shame, and even death itself, has been defeated through Jesus. God doesn’t just redeem moments; he redeems eternity.
This is who God is. He takes what feels lost and restores it. He takes what feels broken and makes it whole. He takes what feels like the end and writes a new beginning.
Whatever you’re carrying today - regret, pain, disappointment - place it in his hands. The same God who gave victory in the battle, who raised a banner over his people, and who conquered the grave is still redeeming lives today.
Questions:
Where in your life do you need to trust God’s redemption?
Are you holding onto something God is asking you to surrender?
How have you seen God bring good from difficult seasons before?
Next Steps:
Write down one area that feels broken and surrender it to God in prayer.
Reflect on past moments where God redeemed a situation, and thank him for it.
Speak truth over your situation: God is not finished yet.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for being a redeemer. You see every broken place in my life and yet you are not intimidated by any of it. Help me trust you with what I cannot fix. Remind me that you are working even when I don’t see it. Raise your banner over my life and lead me into your victory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Jeremiah 9:23-24a
This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord….”
