New Testament Reading Plan: Hebrews 6
This past weekend, CedarCreek’s very own Josh Whitlow delivered an outstanding message on the speaking scriptures. He expounded on three things he has learned about God’s Word:
- Why the Bible has authority.
- Why that’s a good thing.
- How that authority speaks into your life.
Pastor Josh explained that trusting the authority of God’s Word is a good thing, because God knows best! His teaching made it quite clear that the more we engage in the instructions in the Word, and the more we follow Christ, the more we grow in loving his Word. God’s voice is the one that truly matters, so we should reflect on it and hold onto its truths.
Things we once believed to be wise, like hiding under school desks during a nuclear attack, we now realize are useless. Some of the things we believe today will eventually become just as ludicrous. Thankfully, this is not true of the Bible This extraordinary collection of ancient writings is as relevant today as it was when it was written over 1,600 years ago. God often does not teach us through something new;, rather, his Word points us back to what we already know, but need to remember.
2 Peter 1:12-15 NIV
So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body. Because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.
The apostle Peter wrote these verses to Jewish and Gentile followers in various churches in Asia Minor to remind them to be firmly rooted in faith and in God’s Word. Peter knew that his time with them was coming to an end, so he wanted them to remember that he was an eyewitness of Jesus’ teachings, and that they should heed the Word which points to Jesus and his second coming.
Remember that God’s Word speaks into every part of our lives, offering light in darkness, truth in confusion, and hope for the future. Let it be your foundation, your guide, and your daily reminder that God is faithful and his promises never fail.
Questions:
Can you trust the authority of the Bible? How much do you engage with the Bible? Are you confident that the more you place the authority of the Bible in your life, the more it will guide your life?
Next Steps:
Read 2 Peter 1:12-21 (NIV) to discover the prophecy of Scripture.
- Read God’s Word every day.
- Reflect on God’s Word.
- Memorize God’s Word.
Prayer:
Father, thank you for your promises in the scriptures. Thank you for sending your Son to die for our sins and the promise of his second coming. Keep me grounded in the truths contained in the Bible. Help me to remember and reflect on them. I love and serve you every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Psalm 85:8
I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways.
