New Testament Reading Plan: 3 John
Proverbs 16:9
We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.
Making plans is part of everyday life. We plan our schedules, set goals, and work toward a preferred future. But no matter how detailed or well-intentioned those plans are, there's always one reality we can't escape: we are not in control of the outcomes.
Sometimes things shift in ways no one expected. Relationships falter, opportunities fall through, or circumstances take a sudden detour. It's easy to feel disoriented when life doesn't unfold as planned, and these moments challenge more than just our plans. The tension lies in this: planning isn't wrong, but when our plans become the measure of our peace or purpose, they turn into idols.
Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that God is the one who determines our steps. He sees the whole picture, even when we don't. That shift in perspective moves us from disappointment to trust, reminding us that surrender isn't about giving up, it's about giving over control to the one who sees what we can't.
Holding onto control may feel safe, but it's an illusion. Routines, goals, and comfort zones give the appearance of stability, yet life can change in an instant. The call of faith is to surrender, not to chaos or resignation, but to a good and sovereign God who knows exactly what we need and when we need it.
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
As you plan your days and pursue your goals, hold them with open hands. Trust that even detours can be divine when God is the one guiding your steps. Peace doesn’t come from having the perfect plan, instead it comes from walking closely with the one who does. You may not know exactly what’s ahead, but you can move forward with confidence, knowing this: God’s purpose is greater than your plans, and his direction will never lead you where his grace cannot sustain you.
Questions:
What plan are you holding tightly to today? Where might God be inviting you to surrender, trust, and follow him more?
Next Steps:
When plans change or the unexpected happens, pause and pray: "God, I surrender this to you. Help me trust you with what I don't understand." Then take one small step of obedience, even if it's uncertain, trusting that he is leading, even in the shift.
Prayer:
God, thank you for caring about every detail of my life. Help me release my grip on control and trust in your timing, your ways, and your outcomes. Teach me to walk in obedience, even when I don't understand. I surrender my plans to you today. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Psalm 85:8
I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways.
