Bible in a Year: Psalms 6-8 | Acts 5

Drift doesn’t announce itself. It shows up as worry when our thoughts race ahead of us – when we try to predict outcomes and control what hasn’t happened yet. We plan, replay conversations, imagine worst-case scenarios, all disguised as being responsible. But underneath it all is a quiet loss of trust in God’s truth.

We find comfort in Jesus’ words:

John 16:13-15
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’”

Jesus promises that when the Holy Spirit comes, he will guide us into all truth and tell us about the future. The Spirit doesn’t speculate or stir fear. He speaks only what he receives from the Father and the Son. When he guides us, he doesn’t overwhelm us with what’s coming. He anchors us in truth for what’s next.

I’ve felt this tension personally. There have been moments when uncertainty about the future pulled me into a cycle of worry. I tried to manage outcomes, thinking if I planned enough, thought far enough ahead, or stayed busy, I could protect myself from disappointment. The more I tried to control what was ahead, the more anxious and disconnected I became. In those moments, the Holy Spirit didn’t give me the answers I wanted. Instead, he reminded me of what was true:

God is present.

God is faithful.

God is already there.

These truths guard my heart when fear tries to take over, and they guide me back to trust.

The Holy Spirit is actively involved in our lives, especially when fear pulls us away. He guards us from drifting into anxiety and gently redirects us to peace by keeping us aligned with God’s truth. When we listen, we don’t have to know everything about the future. We just have to trust the one who does.

Staying aligned with God isn’t about predicting what’s next. It’s about listening for the Spirit’s voice today. When we surrender control, stay connected in community, and invite accountability, the Holy Spirit keeps us grounded and moving forward.

Questions:
Where are you trying to control future outcomes instead of trusting God?

How does worry reveal places where you’re drifting from truth?

What might the Holy Spirit be inviting you to surrender right now?

Next Steps:
This week, when worry about the future surfaces, pause and pray:

Holy Spirit, guide me in truth right now. Lead me where you need me. My answer is YES and AMEN!

Be sure to stay connected through a Christian community and invite someone you trust to help keep you grounded.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, I admit that I often try to control what comes next instead of trusting you. When fear and worry rise, help me listen for your voice of truth. Guard my heart from anxiety and guide me into peace. Teach me to surrender the future and walk faithfully with you today. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:

Hebrews 2:1
So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
