You and I face challenges every day. At times, we’ve all had doubts about our ability to overcome them. Why? Because as humans, we don’t see ourselves the way God does.
God sees greatness in each and every one of us. He has gifted us with the abilities and tools to face any trial or challenge and come out on top. So what causes some of us to persevere and others to throw in the towel? I think victory comes when we’re willing to take a step of faith, trusting God’s vision for our lives.
What is the greatness God sees in us? Is it great physical stature, a brilliant mind, or exceptional athletic ability? No—God sees greatness in our hearts.
1 Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
The Holy Spirit is at work in our hearts, growing our faith. He gives us faith to take that first brave step for ourselves and to be the encouraging voice to help others see greatness in themselves. This is the kind of faith that Sonny had in Michael Jordan, in the movie, Air.
Sonny was honest with Michael. He told Michael about all the hardships he would face in his life, how people would doubt and slander him. He told Michael of the many hurts and challenges he would encounter. And then Sonny asked Michael, “What will you do then?”
Would Michael have the strength to get back up, press on, and overcome? Sonny thought so. He showed his faith in Michael’s greatness when he said, “I think you already know the answer.”
There are so many great stories of people who have overcome great obstacles. Their stories inspire you and me to see the greatness in ourselves and to take the first step on our own journey.
The late contemporary Christian artist, Mandisa, recorded a song called “Overcomer.” One line states, “You’re not going under, cause God is holding you right now.” Friends, regardless of the challenge you are facing today, I encourage you to ask God to reveal the greatness he created you for.
Then don’t just think it—act! Step out in faith and watch God guide you to being an overcomer.
Questions:
Do you see greatness in yourself?
Do you have the faith to take the first step or are you content to just think, but not take action?
Next Steps:
Listen to the song “Overcomer” by Mandisa and read the lyrics.
Ask God to help you see the greatness that he created in you and others.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, you are almighty and powerful. It is hard for me to believe you see greatness in me when, sometimes, all I see is weakness and fear. Help me to discover the greatness in myself and others. Give me the faith and courage to take action when I am afraid to even take the first step. Father, I believe that with my faith and your guidance, I too can be an overcomer. In Jesus’ precious name I pray, amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Romans 1:20
For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
