In Matthew 22:39-40, Jesus reminds us that the greatest commandments are to love God and others. But what happens when we're not even sure how to love ourselves? If we're not careful, our love becomes conditional, tied to our feelings or what we get in return.
This week, we are taking a deeper look at Jesus' teaching about loving others as we love ourselves.
Jesus demonstrates that it's not about showing up perfectly but about showing up rooted in his love. Let's start there.
Discussion Questions:
Ice Breaker: What's a small act of love or kindness someone showed you recently that stuck with you?
What would our church look like if we all truly loved others the way Jesus teaches - without strings attached or expectations in return?
Read and Reflect: Read Matthew 22:37-40. What does it look like to truly love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and how does that love naturally flow into how we treat other people?
Do you find it easier to love others or to love yourself? Why do you think that is?
Reflect and Respond: Where do you see your love being shaped more by your needs than by God's love for you? How can you start loving others more from God's love and less from your strength?
Prayer:
God, I desire to love you with all my heart, soul, and thoughts. I ask for your help in letting the love you so freely give me overflow into how I treat others. Help me to see people the way you do, to love without conditions, and to live in a way that reflects your heart. Show me where I can grow in love this week, and give me the courage to take the next step. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
Series Theme Verse:
John 8:31-32
Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
