New Testament Reading Plan: James 4
Storms have a way of making us feel small. The thunder shakes our confidence, the winds of uncertainty howl through our thoughts, and the floodwaters of fear threaten to rise higher than our hope.
Yet even in those moments, though it may be hard to see, our Lord will meet us right where we are and offer his strength.
Psalms 29:10–11
The Lord rules over the floodwaters.
The Lord reigns as king forever.
The Lord gives his people strength.
The Lord blesses them with peace.
When everything around us feels unstable, his sovereignty is our anchor.
David wrote these words in the Book of Psalms. You can almost feel how awed he was by God's power. Not only does he have the power to command nature, but he also has the power to sustain his people through whatever storm they face. And our merciful Lord who reigns forever also gives us the strength to endure, perseverance to stand firm, and peace that steadies the soul when fear threatens to overwhelm.
That means whether your storm is grief, uncertainty, loss, or transition, you can choose praise instead of sinking in the floodwaters.
When we trust his promises, we realize that his peace never leaves us in places of despair; we need only look for him there.
So, take heart today. The floodwaters may rise, but God still reigns. His throne is unshaken, his promises are sure, and his strength is yours to receive. Be blessed by this knowledge, and carry the peace it provides in your heart.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Questions:
How have you seen God's strength or peace sustain you in past challenges?
What does it look like for you to choose praise in the middle of uncertainty?
Next Steps:
Pause and Praise: Take five minutes today to thank God specifically for his control, even in the midst of chaos. Or read Psalm 29 aloud and reflect on God's power and peace.
Share a word of comfort or a verse with someone going through their own storm this week.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the promise that even when the storms rage, you still reign. Remind me when I'm on the verge of drowning in flood waters, that no flood of fear or circumstance can overpower your throne. Please give me the strength to stand in faith and peace, resting in your control. Help me choose praise today, not because everything is calm, but because you are still in charge. I love you, I trust you, and I worship you. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Romans 1:20
For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
