Bible in a Year: Psalms 60-62 | Acts 23
Have you ever felt the Spirit move in you?
The Holy Spirit is not some mystical feeling that we follow. As Christians, we are filled and empowered by the Spirit, who produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23).
The apostle Paul reminds readers in the book of Romans, that our identity is no longer defined by our sinful nature, but by the Holy Spirit living within us.
Romans 8:9
But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you….
This verse is a wonderful definition of what it means to be a Christian, and it provides definitive evidence of salvation. It shifts authority from the flesh (the unhealthy choices we want to make) to the Spirit (the fulfilling life God has in store for us). When the Spirit dwells within us, we are transformed from living in sin to living according to the will of God. Not in a sudden, seamless shift, but through his steady nudging as we choose to listen and respond.
Without the Spirit, we drift, and our desires shift with our emotions. But, when we belong to Christ, his Spirit anchors us, gently redirects us when we wander, and strengthens us when we are stuck in our own weaknesses.
Romans 8:26
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
If you’ve ever struggled to find the right words to pray or you couldn’t find words at all, this verse provides comfort in knowing that God’s Holy Spirit is praying on our behalf. The Spirit intercedes between us and God, guiding us to God’s will.
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
This verse tells us that God has a plan for us. It does not tell us that things will always feel good in the moment. But we can be confident that God has a master plan for us, and he will work things together for good in the end.
God has it, and God has us!
