John 4:10
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”

If we’re honest, we’ve all drawn from the wrong well at times. Approval that never quite fills us. Achievement that ties our worth to our progress. Pleasure that fades. Escape that numbs but never heals. We keep going back, hoping this time it will be satisfying.

But it never is.

Because our souls weren’t designed for temporary water. They were designed for living water.

In John chapter 4, a Samaritan woman came looking for water, but Jesus knew she was carrying a deeper thirst. Not just physical thirst, but a thirst at the soul-level.

And instead of shaming her story, he gently revealed it because he was trying to free her, not expose her. He was revealing an offer that would actually satisfy.

We’re not that different.

Even two thousand years later, we go to wells like approval, achievement, pleasure, or escape, hoping they’ll finally fill us. And for a moment, they might feel like they do… but we always end up thirsty again.

Thankfully, as he did for this Samaritan woman, Jesus offers all of us something better: living water.

A relationship with him that actually sustains us.

Jesus is still inviting you to leave the jar behind and come alive in him, the one who never runs dry.

Will you say yes to that invitation today?

Discussion Questions:

Ice Breaker: Share a time when you were really looking forward to something, but once you finally had it, it wasn’t quite as satisfying as you hoped.

In what ways does staying connected to Jesus help us reach and impact others more effectively?

Read John 4:1-42. The woman left her water jar behind after encountering Jesus. (v. 28) What might your “jar” be—something you’ve been relying on that you may need to release?

Which “well” do you tend to go back to (approval, achievement, pleasure, escape)? Why do you think that is?

Reflect and Respond: Jesus talks about both living water and doing the work the Father sent him to do (his “food”). Why do you think it’s important to both take care of your own needs and also find purpose in helping others?

Prayer:
Jesus, thank you for offering living water that truly satisfies. Help me leave behind what can’t fill me, and draw closer to you each day. Refresh my heart and make me come alive in your love. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:

2 Corinthians 5:20
So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”
