Bible in a Year: Psalms 140-142 | James 4

We all know that feeling - when we’ve messed up in a big way. The kind of mistake you can’t take back, where the reality of it turns into a sinking feeling in your chest, accompanied by guilt, regret, shame, panic.

Romans 3:23
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

You try to reason a way out of it, convincing yourself it’s not that bad, pulling together a solution, maybe even thinking of ways to cover it up, hide it, or blame it on someone else.

But you know, at the end of the day, it’s your neck on the line for this; your head on the chopping block; your blood they’re calling out for (metaphorically speaking, hopefully).

How would you feel if someone else stepped into that moment, took the guilt, and bore the consequences - all out of love for you? How would it feel for someone to erase your biggest mistake, biggest regret, or biggest problem?

That’s what the blood Jesus spilled represents.

Romans 3:24
Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Throughout human history, deep symbolism has been tied to blood. For Jesus, his blood was a covenant made to those who believe in him, a promise to free us from our sins. It was a sacrifice, the cost of setting us free - his life for ours.

Ephesians 1:7
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Jesus’ willingness to die is meaningful, but it’s his blood, his sacrifice, that transformed us - healing our hearts, restoring our relationship with God, and making us free.

It’s a gift. All we have to do is accept it.

Questions:
What is the biggest mistake you’ve made - and how does it feel to know Jesus offers freedom from it?

Have you accepted this gift of freedom Jesus offers?

Next Steps:
Thank God for the sacrifice he gave so we can be cleansed of our sins. When you make a mistake, or find yourself thinking back on old ones, remind yourself that those sins have been washed away - they don’t define you.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so much that you sacrificed your Son to make us new. Thank you for the blood he willingly shed so that we can be clean. Help us to remember and live from this sacrifice, as we walk in the light you’ve called us to. May your will be done in us and through us. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:

Ephesians 1:5
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
