There’s something in us that naturally wants to rise above and be noticed, affirmed, or maybe even just understood. But if we’re not careful, these feelings can easily turn relationships into a game of keeping score, proving points, or holding back until the other person meets us halfway.
But Jesus offers us a completely different approach.
Luke 14:11
“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Humility isn’t about thinking less of yourself; it’s about releasing the need to protect, promote, or prove yourself. When we live humbly, we show up with open hands instead of guarded ones. And that kind of posture changes everything.
Because when we’re secure in God’s love, we don’t have to fight to be seen or valued. We already are. That frees us to step into our relationships differently - not from pride or self-protection, but from a place of steady confidence in who God says we are.
Humility looks like listening instead of defending.
Serving instead of measuring.
Leaning in instead of pulling away.
It doesn’t mean ignoring hurt or pretending things are perfect. But it does mean choosing connection over control.
When we humble ourselves, we’re not losing. Instead, we’re making space for God to move, restore, deepen, and lift what we don’t have to force on our own.
As you reflect on this week, where might God be inviting you to lay something down? Is there a conversation where you can choose to listen more than speak? Is there an opportunity to encourage someone else instead of needing recognition for yourself? Maybe there’s a situation where you could offer help without waiting to be asked. Consider taking a step toward humility, even if it feels small.
When we say yes to God, honest relationships and true connections naturally follow. As we choose to trust him, we open the door to deeper understanding, grace, and warmth in our interactions with others.
Prayer:
God, thank you for loving me just as I am. Help me to let go of the need to promote myself and to trust that you see and value me. Give me the courage to choose humility in my relationships and to serve others with open hands. Teach me to listen, to encourage, and to extend grace - just as you have done for me. Transform my heart so others may see your love through me. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Galatians 5:13
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
