Bible in a Year: Proverbs 20-21 | Luke 6
Characteristics of God: He is a protector.
Few people remember the Covid years with any fondness or nostalgia. Fraught with uncertainty and confusion, not wanting to endanger people with our actions, we were constantly questioning if any preventative measures really would make anyone safer. But what a time for growing in faith in God as our protector!
At that time, the Lord gave me Psalm 91, a song that praises God for his protection in challenging circumstances, and I was so grateful!
While many people around me, Christians included, hid in their homes and disinfected everything that had come in contact with anyone or anything outside their houses, I was able to dwell in the shelter of the Almighty and abide in his shadow.
I said to the Lord:
“(You are) my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:2 NIV)
I prayed and memorized that Psalm then, and I continue to rest in its promises today.
“Surely (you) will save (me) from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. (You) will cover (me) with (your) feathers, and under (your) wings (I) will find refuge!” (Psalm 91:3-4a NIV).
I dare you to read through that Psalm and not feel the care and protection of God in your life. Even though they were written for people a millenia ago, these promises are for us too! Our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever!
Lord, because you are my dwelling place … “no harm will overtake (me), no disaster will come near (my) tent” (Psalm 91:9-10 NIV).
What do we have to fear? God has promised us his protection! Sure, it may not always look the way we thought it would, and yes, some kind of evil may come near our tent, but we have God’s protection, and he has ordained the outcome for his glory!
Because I love you, Lord, you have promised to answer me when I call; you will be with me in trouble, and you will deliver and honor me. With long life, you will satisfy me and show me your salvation (Psalm 91:15-16 NIV).
With these powerful declarations, why would we ever be afraid … of anything? God is on our side, and we can trust in his love and his strength no matter what.
Questions:
Do you trust God as your protector? Do you have a foundation for your trust?
Next Steps:
Read all of Psalm 91! It’s only 16 verses, but they are packed with confidence and God’s promises. Memorize it, and turn it into a personal prayer the way I have.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I am so grateful for the love and care you show me every day! I trust in you, Lord! Your promises are real and true. I have no reason to fear, because you are with me always. Thank you for your Word, full of reminders that I can rest in your care and protection. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Jeremiah 9:23-24a
This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord….”
