Characteristics of God: He is unchanging.
Life rarely holds still.
Circumstances shift, plans fall through, and relationships change. One moment we feel secure, the next we may feel adrift. Our emotions can swing from hope to doubt, from confidence to uncertainty, sometimes for reasons we can’t quite name. What once felt certain yesterday may suddenly seem unclear today, leaving us searching for something steady to hold onto amid all the changes.
That’s where this unchanging truth meets us—right in the middle of our shifting lives, offering the stability we long for.
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
God is not like everything else in our lives. He doesn’t shift with circumstances or adjust for our performance. He is constant. God is always steady in character, unwavering in love, and consistent in presence. Scripture reminds us, “I am the Lord, and I do not change” (Malachi 3:6) and calls him the Father “who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17).
While so much around us feels uncertain, God is always steady.
His goodness doesn’t fluctuate when life gets hard. His love doesn’t weaken when we do.
His faithfulness isn’t based on how well we hold things together. Even if we are unfaithful, “he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is” (2 Timothy 2:13).
And that kind of stability is not distant or abstract. It becomes a refuge.
When everything else moves, God is where we can stand. When thoughts spiral, or circumstances overwhelm, his unchanging nature reminds us his mercies “begin each morning afresh,” and his faithfulness never fails (Lamentations 3:22–23).
We may not always know what’s coming next. But we can know the One who does.
Today, whatever feels uncertain or unsettled, bring it to the God who never changes. Let his steadiness ground and calm you.
Because even when life is unpredictable, he is always faithful.
Discussion Questions:
Ice Breaker: What’s one thing you wish stayed the same forever?
What are some common assumptions people make about God’s character when he feels silent or distant?
Read Exodus 3:1-14: What stands out to you about how God reveals himself to Moses? How does God respond to Moses’ uncertainty?
Where in your life do you need to remember that God doesn’t change?
Reflect & Respond: If you truly believed God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, how would that change the way you face what’s ahead?
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for being unchanging when everything else shifts around me. Help me rest in your steady love and trust your faithfulness today. I love you, I trust you, and I worship you. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Jeremiah 9:23-24a
This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord….”
