1 Corinthians 13:7
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Paul's words in 1 Corinthians describe what real, faithful, committed love looks like. Why else would it be used at so many weddings? But these verses weren't meant only for married couples. Showing love that never gives up is meant for every one of us, in all our relationships - whether with friends, children, family members, coworkers, you name it!

If you're like me, you may be asking, “Well then, what happens to this love when there is conflict?” Because if we're honest, it's not always easy to stay hopeful and not give up, especially after being passed up for a promotion at work. Or when harsh words from a friend hit us out of nowhere. Or when we argue with our spouse, and the words that fly back and forth reopen wounds we thought had healed.

Relationships are hard. When we feel hurt, defensive, or worn out from trying to hold things together, loving the way Paul describes can feel almost impossible.

So how do we keep loving when conflict makes us want to pull away?

The answer begins with where we look for help. As followers of Jesus, we don't have to figure out how to love others on our own. Jesus is our perfect example, showing us what it looks like to love with patience, grace, truth, and perseverance.

As we look ahead to this week, we'll explore how to navigate relational conflict and discover ways to persevere when giving up feels like the only option. Instead, let’s get curious about what it means to fight for our relationships and keep choosing love, even when it’s difficult.

Discussion Questions:

Ice Breaker: What's a friendship or relationship you've had for a long time? What has helped it last?

Why do you think conflict often causes people to pull away instead of moving toward one another?

Read John 21:3-14: Peter had publicly failed Jesus, yet Jesus chose to move toward him. What stands out to you about the way Jesus responds to Peter? What can we learn from his example?

When conflict or disappointment happens in a relationship, do you tend to avoid, attack, or move toward the person? Why?

Reflect and Respond: How might your relationships change if you focused more on what God is trying to grow in you than on proving you're right?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, you are the ultimate giver of love. Help me to live in a way that mirrors your heart for others and shows that my faith and hope are grounded in you. I love you, I trust you, and I worship you. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:

Ephesians 4:15
Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.
