“Ya can’t take it with you!”

We’ve all heard this saying, whether it was someone trying to talk us out of an unnecessary purchase or reminding us to be careful with our money. But those familiar words hide a deeper truth worth remembering.

1 Timothy 6:6-7
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.

Our time on this earth is limited, and so is the time we get to enjoy the things we own. As this verse reminds us, we entered the world with nothing, and that’s exactly what we’ll take with us when we leave it.

Think about that for a moment. Everything we work so hard to earn, buy, and hold on to is temporary. What if God never intended our money to be something we cling to for security, but something we can use to make a difference?

When we believe we need more to be happy, secure, or satisfied, generosity can feel like a loss. We worry that giving something away means having less for ourselves. Yet when we find our contentment in Christ, we begin to see what we have differently.

As we look ahead to this week, let’s shift our focus from how much we can keep to how we might use what God has given us to bless others.

This means recognizing that what we have in Christ is worth far more than anything money can buy. When we truly grasp this truth, we can give more freely - not because we have everything we want, but because we trust the One who provides for our needs. So when we give, it's because we long to share God’s generosity with others.

Discussion Questions:

Ice Breaker: Are you naturally more of a giver or a saver?

Why do you think people often view giving as a financial issue rather than a heart issue?

Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-15: What do you think Paul, the author of 2 Corinthians, meant when he said, “God loves a cheerful giver”?

How might your relationship with money change if you truly believed everything you have has been entrusted to you by God?

Reflect and Respond: What's one intentional step you can take this week toward greater generosity with your time, resources, encouragement, or finances?

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for all you’ve given me. Help me to trust your provision and to give generously, knowing my true security is found in you. Teach me to share your blessings freely with my church and with others. I love you, I trust you, and I worship you. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:

1 Timothy 6:6-7
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
