Bible in a Year Reading Plan: 2 Samuel 1-4 | John 3

We live in a world that constantly tells us we need more. More money, more possessions, more comfort, more success. We are encouraged to believe that the next purchase, paycheck, or achievement will finally make us feel fulfilled. However, Jesus offers us a different life: one enriched by what we give, not just by what we gain.

Luke 12:34
“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

What we choose to invest in reveals what matters to us, but it also shapes what matters to us. When we consistently give our time, resources, and energy to the things of God, our hearts begin to reflect his priorities. Generosity is not simply an action; it is a transformation.

Think about the last time you gave something away. Maybe you paid for someone’s coffee, donated to a family in need, offered your time to someone who felt alone, or gave financially even when it meant sacrificing something you wanted. Did it leave you feeling a little lighter? Did it remind you that your life could make a difference beyond yourself?

That is the beauty of generosity. It loosens the grip of selfishness and makes room for compassion. It teaches us to see people as more than interruptions, needs as more than inconveniences, and our resources as more than things meant for our own comfort. We begin to recognize that everything we have is an opportunity to reflect the heart of a generous God.

Generosity does not require wealth. Sometimes the most meaningful gifts cost nothing at all: a listening ear, an encouraging word, an unexpected act of kindness, or a willingness to show up when someone needs you most.

The goal is not to give until we have nothing left or to earn God's love through our sacrifices. We give out of gratitude because we have already received so much from him. Our greatest fulfillment is found not in accumulating more, but in becoming more like Jesus.

So today, consider where your treasure is going. Is it being invested only in what benefits you, or is it also being used to love, serve, and bless others? You may discover that as you open your hands, God is also opening your heart.

Questions:
Where are you currently investing most of your time, money, and energy? What does that reveal about the condition of your heart?

How has someone else’s generosity impacted your life? Can you extend that same love to someone else?

Next Steps:
Choose one practical way to bless someone this week, whether through your finances, your time, or a thoughtful act of kindness.

Ask God to help you align your investments with what matters to him.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for being so generous with me. Forgive me for the times I have believed that having more would bring me the happiness only you can provide. Teach me to hold my possessions, my time, and my resources with open hands. May my giving reflect your goodness, and may my heart grow closer to yours with every act of kindness. Help me remember that true abundance is not measured by what I accumulate, but by the love I share. Let my life be a reflection of your generosity. In Jesus' name, amen.

Series Theme Verse:

1 Timothy 6:6-7
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
