Bible in a Year Reading Plan: 2 Samuel 5-9 | John 4

I wonder how many prayers God has answered through people who never realized they were being used by him. Someone prays for encouragement, and a friend reaches out. Someone struggles to make ends meet, and an unexpected gift arrives. Someone feels forgotten, and another person reminds them they matter.

I've been on both sides of generosity. And when I think about the times someone showed up for me, what stays with me isn't necessarily what they gave. It's that someone noticed. They saw a need I may not have even spoken aloud and cared enough to respond.

Acts 20:35
“And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

In Acts 20, the author, Paul, is saying goodbye to the church leaders in Ephesus. He reminds them that he worked hard, not just to provide for himself, but to help those in need. He also reminds them of Jesus’ promise that we are blessed when we give to others.

Understandably, we often talk about what it means to be blessed as a giver. But I wonder if we sometimes overlook how God is at work in the life of the receiver.

Paul understood that generosity was more than an act of kindness. It was a reflection of Jesus, who gave himself for people who could never repay him.

And here's where this challenges me.

I can recognize a need and genuinely want to help, but still hesitate. Maybe the timing isn't convenient. Maybe I'm unsure whether I have enough to give. Or maybe I assume someone else will step in. But what if God is asking me?

Generosity isn't just about having something to give. It's about being willing to obey when God prompts us to give it. That doesn't mean responding to every need we encounter. It means paying attention, seeking God's direction, and trusting him enough to act when he calls.

We may never know what someone prayed before God placed them in our path. We may never see how our obedience changes their circumstances or strengthens their faith. But perhaps that's part of the blessing.

We don't have to see the outcome to trust the One who does. Because sometimes God answers someone's prayer by inviting us to become part of the answer.

Questions:
Has God been prompting you to show generosity toward someone, but you've hesitated to respond? What's holding you back?

How might your willingness to give, whether it's your time, resources, or encouragement, become part of God's answer to someone else's prayer?

Next Steps:
Ask God to show you one person who needs encouragement, support, or generosity today. Pay attention to his prompting, and when he places someone on your heart, take action. Don't just recognize the need. Be willing to become part of the answer.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the many ways you provide for me. Open my eyes to the needs of others and my heart to your prompting. Give me the courage to respond in obedience, even when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable. Help me trust you with what you've placed in my hands and use my generosity to remind others of your love. In Jesus' name, amen.

Series Theme Verse:

1 Timothy 6:6-7
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
