Bible in a Year: Proverbs 13 | Luke 1

Characteristics of God: He is faithful.

Lamentations 3:23–24
Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”

It is easy to picture someone standing in victory. Someone whose prayers were answered, whose life is finally working out, whose heart is overflowing with gratitude for God’s provision.

But that is not why these words were written.

The book of Lamentations is believed to have been written by the prophet Jeremiah after the destruction of Jerusalem around 586 BC. The city had fallen. The temple was destroyed. People were grieving, displaced, exhausted, and wondering where God was in the middle of their suffering.

This was not a season of comfort. It was a season of heartbreak.

And right in the middle of deep sorrow and devastation, Jeremiah writes these words:

“The faithful love of the Lord never ends.”

That changes how I read this passage.

Because these verses weren’t written from a place of ease. They were written from pain and confusion, from the kind of circumstances where people might have easily believed that God had abandoned them.

But despite his circumstances, Jeremiah reminds himself of something deeper: God is still faithful.

I think that matters for us today - because life still brings seasons that feel uncertain. Plans fall apart. Relationships break. Diagnoses come. Doors close. Grief shows up unexpectedly. Sometimes we quietly wonder the same thing the Israelites wondered then, “God, where are you?”

What I love about God’s faithfulness is that it’s not dependent on whether our circumstances feel stable. His character does not change when our lives do.

He remains steady.

That does not mean the pain isn’t real. The book of Lamentations proves that God allows space for grief, sorrow, questions, and honesty. But woven through all of it is this reminder: suffering does not erase God’s faithfulness.

In fact, sometimes we see his faithfulness most clearly when everything else feels uncertain.

God has consistently carried me through seasons I thought would break me. I survived, not because I was strong, but because he remained faithful when I was not.

So when someone asks me, “What is God like?”

I tell them that he is faithful in the middle of loss.

Faithful in the waiting.

Faithful in the unanswered questions.

Faithful even when life does not make sense.

Questions:
How does knowing the context of this passage change the way you read it?

Where do you need the reminder today that God’s faithfulness is not dependent on your circumstances?

Next Steps:
Read all of Lamentations 3 this week, and take note of how honesty about pain and confidence in God’s faithfulness can exist together. When you are finished, spend some time in prayer, welcoming God into any areas where you are currently struggling.

Prayer:
God, thank you for remaining faithful even in seasons of grief, confusion, and uncertainty. Thank you that your love does not disappear when life feels heavy. Help me trust your character even when I do not understand my circumstances. Remind me that you are steady, present, and merciful every single morning. Teach me to cling to your faithfulness no matter what season I walk through. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:

Jeremiah 9:23-24a
This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord….”
