Bible in a Year: Job 19-20 | Matthew 12
We often believe real change starts with trying harder. We promise ourselves we’ll be more disciplined, patient, and consistent. But usually, that story ends the same way. We don’t just wake up and overcome our struggles. The issue isn’t usually effort—it’s what’s beneath it.
Beliefs shape our choices before we act on them. What we believe about ourselves, God, and what will satisfy us quietly drives the patterns we repeat. If unchallenged, these beliefs prevent lasting change, no matter how much we manage our behavior.
Romans 12:2
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
God isn’t asking you to perform better; he’s inviting you to think differently.
Real transformation happens when God changes what you believe at your core. This is where change truly begins and lasts.
If we focus only on behavior, improvement may be temporary, and we miss the deeper work God wants to do. But when we allow him to renew our minds, our actions begin to change from within. We start to see his will as good, pleasing, and perfect.
As you reflect on your journey, consider the beliefs that may be shaping your repeated patterns.
Perhaps there is one belief that does not align with God’s truth. Allow yourself to invite God into this space, asking him to help you see that belief differently and to lead you toward lasting transformation. Trust that as you bring your honest response to God, he will meet you there and begin the deeper work of renewal.
Lasting change comes when you allow God to renew your beliefs. When we say yes to this invitation from him, true transformation and freedom begin through him.
Questions:
Is there a repeated pattern in your life that effort alone hasn’t changed?
How can Scripture help replace false beliefs with truth?
Next Steps:
Identify one belief about yourself, God, or what will satisfy you that may not reflect God's truth. Then, specifically invite God to help you see this belief differently and guide you toward lasting change. Take a moment to write down your response and your invitation to God.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I know real change doesn't start with me trying harder. It starts with how I think. Today, I'm bringing you (insert belief) and asking you to show me what's true. Help me to let go of what's holding me back and shape the way I see myself, you, and my life. I trust you with this process. I love you, I trust you, and I worship you. Amen
Series Theme Verse:
Ephesians 1:5
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
