Bible in a Year Reading Plan: Daniel 7-12 | John 9
Have you ever discovered something so valuable that it changed the way you viewed everything else?
Imagine cleaning out a closet or sorting through an old box when you stumble across something unexpectedly valuable. Suddenly, the things you once thought were important don't seem quite so important anymore. Your priorities change and you begin to make room for what you've discovered because you recognize its worth.
Sometimes, that's exactly what happens when we begin to understand the value of God's Kingdom. We start looking at our lives differently. The money we've been spending, the commitments filling our calendars, the debt weighing on our shoulders, and the priorities competing for our attention all come into a new perspective.
It's not that everything we once enjoyed becomes bad. It's that we've discovered something better, something worth rearranging our lives to pursue.
In Matthew 13:44, Jesus tells a story about a man who discovers hidden treasure and joyfully sells everything he owns to obtain it. His response challenges us to ask ourselves a powerful question: Have I discovered the treasure of God's Kingdom so deeply that I'm willing to rearrange my life around it?
Matthew 13:44
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.”
Following Jesus invites us to examine our own lives with that same perspective. Sometimes, living fully for God’s purposes requires us to rearrange things. It might mean changing our spending habits, creating a plan to tackle debt, saying no to commitments that leave us spiritually exhausted, or making room in our schedules for prayer, service, and relationships that matter eternally.
These changes can feel uncomfortable. We may have to surrender convenience, temporary pleasures, or even things we’ve always considered priorities. But what if we stopped viewing these adjustments as losses and started seeing them as opportunities to make room for something greater?
When we understand the treasure we've found in Christ, our priorities begin to change. Generosity becomes more meaningful, serving becomes an act of worship, and time spent with God becomes a joy rather than another task on our to-do list.
You don't have to rearrange everything overnight. Start with one faithful step. When you discover something worth more than anything this world can offer, making room for it isn't just a sacrifice. It's a joy.
Questions:
What currently receives the greatest share of your time, money, and energy?
Is there a habit, commitment, or financial priority God may be inviting you to reconsider?
Next Steps:
Review your spending, and identify one practical way to align your finances with God’s purposes.
Choose one commitment or distraction to reduce this week so you can make more room for God.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, open my eyes to the treasure I have in you. Forgive me for the times I've clung so tightly to temporary things that I've lost sight of what matters eternally. Give me the courage to examine my priorities honestly and the wisdom to recognize what needs to change. Help me surrender habits, commitments, and desires that pull me away from your purpose. Teach me to see obedience not as a burden, but as a joyful response to your goodness. Let my finances, my time, my relationships, and my choices reflect the treasure I have found in you. In Jesus' name, amen.
Series Theme Verse:
1 Timothy 6:6-7
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
