New Testament Reading Plan: 2 Corinthians 13

Praise God that CedarCreek Church just celebrated its 30th anniversary!

As we reflect on the last 30 years and how God has accomplished mighty things through ordinary people, we are grateful for the founding members of our church. They willingly sacrificed so much to spread the gospel. They prayed and obeyed and watched God provide and perform miracles. They stepped out in love, faith, and obedience to live out the Great Commission.

Matthew 28:18-20
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

I laugh to myself when I think about the original twelve disciples Jesus picked. What a ragtag group: a tax collector, a zealot, fishermen, and a thief who would later betray Jesus. They were taught by the perfect Pastor, Jesus, and still they were self-centered and self-focused at times. They frequently argued about who was the greatest and often missed what was right in front of their faces.

Peter has always been my favorite disciple. He was courageous, he wasn’t afraid to step out in faith, and he was a leader. He truly loved Jesus, yet he also struggled with pride, often put his foot in his mouth, and failed miserably at times. (He reminds me of myself.) Even after all his failures, Jesus knew Peter’s heart and how much Peter loved him. He knew Peter would accomplish mighty things for him, and so Jesus chose him to be the rock of his church.

In other words, Jesus’ apostles were a lot like us: imperfect, fallible, and prideful. Yet Jesus chose them to spread his message, because he saw what they would become. And he sees what you can become, too!

Jesus calls each and every one of us to become his disciples and share the gospel. Just like his original twelve, he knows he can do miraculous things through us if we let him.

The best is yet to come, and I for one can hardly wait to see what God will continue to do through our church.
