Bible in a Year: Proverbs 7 | Colossians 2

Characteristics of God: He is the light of the world.

Turn on a news channel or scroll through social media, and you experience a deafening chaos. It’s the same if you’re bold enough to step outside, where opinions and noise await. It’s an ominous atmosphere of familiarity cloaked in silence. “Hello darkness, my old friend” - the opening line of Simon & Garfunkel’s classic song conveys biblical themes that the world, then and now, relates to.

Darkness is more than a looming shadow of night. It creates shallow connections, loneliness, and depression. It evokes fear and suffocates any goodness attempting to break through. It’s a lot to take in, but think about darkness on a more basic level. Go back to that child who couldn’t go to sleep without a nightlight by the bed. Perhaps you’re the parent who leaves the porch light on for the teenager who hasn’t returned home. You’re in the dark without streetlights, headlights, or Google Maps. You’ll end up lost or on the highway to the danger zone. You can see where light is necessary for the basics; imagine what’s essential for purpose, direction, peace, or truth.

John 8:12
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

Darkness keeps you from living, but you don’t always realize what keeps you in the dark. It’s the beads of sweat dampening your forehead when you enter a crowded area. It’s the emptiness that presents itself when chasing “likes” falls short. It’s the recognition you receive from a job well done that means nothing to you. There are so many levels and paths of darkness, and you can’t navigate them alone. You’ve tried, and those same shadows cloud your mind.

The good thing about finding the light is realizing there’s always a new day, a new beginning, and the chance to live for more. Jesus as “the light” offers healing during seasons of hurt. It could look like working through a 12-step program, forgiveness, or discovering your identity outside of social media. Stay close to Jesus, and you’ll no longer live lost.

Light doesn’t argue with darkness - it overcomes it so you can breathe in new life.

Questions:
What darkness keeps you from seeing the truth? Do you struggle to see Jesus as the light you need?

Next Steps:
Seek guidance through prayer, Scripture, and community. Don’t be afraid to have others pray for you. Find a Bible study that breaks down scripture to fit your understanding. Join Groups throughout the week to live life with other Jesus followers.

Prayer:
Jesus, help me keep my eyes on you. The world is full of deceit, confusion, and hurt. Light my path, and make a way for me to see through the darkness. Let me show your light to others by helping me walk with integrity, love, and wisdom. Amen.

Series Theme Verse:

Jeremiah 9:23-24a
This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord….”
